Guest post: Life at the Old School House

Our family had the good fortune to holiday for six weeks in the village. We stayed in a wonderful property known as the Old School House: “L’ancienne école”. The school house has been lovingly restored and subtly modernised.

After racing around many of the big cities in Europe it was pure pleasure to slow down and enjoy a slice of French country life; the house, the village and the opportunity to explore the French countryside.

The Old School House is spacious and comfortable. Three storeys and plenty of beds.

The garden is a bonus to be able to sit outside and BBQ or enjoy an apéritif.

Close by is a family swimming lake that is popular with the locals from Quillan and other nearby towns.

The village has many attractions at its doorstep: Rennes-les-Bains, the ancient hot pools in the river and picnic areas; Carcassonne, the mediaeval city of the Cathars; and Limoux for the world’s first méthode traditionelle sparkling wine!

The local people were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to encourage our efforts to speak a little French.

We visited Quillan most days, only five minutes by car. Quillan has a post office, bank, supermarkets, restaurants, bars and of course a French bakery.

Thanks Jennifer for sharing your little slice of paradise, we will definitely be back!
